PHOENIX --

Four children were rushed to the hospital with burns Thursday night after they had been playing with matches, firefighters said.

The children were in the backyard of a Phoenix home near 48th Avenue and Thomas Road. Firefighters said the children lit a wheel barrel of trash, and then one child threw flammable liquid onto the fire, which caused a flare up.

A 10-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy were badly burned with injuries to their torsos. Two younger girls suffered minor burns.

Firefighters said adults were inside the house at the time. When they realized what had happened, they put out the fire and called 911.

Fire officials said the 10-year-old girl was in critical condition.
