WEST ALLIS, Wis. --

Fire crews said the fire broke out at about home in the 2200 block of South 65th Street at about 8 a.m. Saturday.

Battalion Chief Chris Reinke said that the father had run into the house twice to save the children.

I realized real quickly there was something wrong because I could hear this rumbling, said Jay Brunson, who ran into the house.

Without thinking Brunson's instincts kicked in, through the blinding smoke he found his youngest son by the bottom of the stairs and carried him outside.

I thought if Im going to do this I cant, I don't have time to reason this out, I just have to go, Brunson said.

The relief of being outside was quickly replaced by the horror that his 4-year-old son, Owen, was still inside.

Blinded by the smoke and burning in the growing heat, Brunson ran up the stairs to Owen's room.

It was so full it was just burning my lungs and my throat and I knew if I took in another breath or two I may not be coming out of there, Brunson said.

Crews said that when they arrived, flames were shooting out of the home.

Investigators determined the fire started on the first floor of the two-story home, but a cause has not been determined.

Firefighters are still working to determine a damage estimate. Crews did not say if a fire alarm was found in the home.
