Nurses Save Babies From Fire in Mass.
BOSTON --
Nurses are being credited with saving two babies from a three-alarm triple-decker fire in Lawrence on Monday morning.
About 14 people were displaced by the fire that tore through the 359 Howard St. building just before 11 a.m. on Monday. Two babies were rescued from the building by nurses who work at the German Home nursing home across the street, the Eagle Tribune reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Officials said firefighters would have arrived at the scene faster if not for budget cuts that shut down some fire stations.
"Engine 6 would have normally been at the fire in probably 30 seconds. The next closest fire station is the Central Fire Station, and that takes a good 3 minutes to respond here. Makes a huge difference in a fire like this," said Acting Lawrence Fire Chief Brian Murphy.
The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents with emergency assistance, including food, clothing and shelter.
