KERSEY, Colo.
--
Two people were seriously injured in an early-morning explosion at a home about five miles north of Kersey, northeast of Greeley.
Firefighters are still investigating the cause, but they said there was a report of a fire in a propane wall heater before the explosion about 2:45 a.m. Monday.
"The initial statements made by the residents were that the fire did start in a wall or in or near the propane fed wall heater and they attempted to extinguish the fire prior to the explosion," said Platte Valley Fire Chief Barry Schaefer.
The farmhome, located at 31721 County Road 53, was destroyed in the blast.
Firefighters said the front door was thrown 30 to 50 feet from the home.
The man and woman who lived in the home were taken to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. The 23-year-old man suffered the most severe injuries, investigators said.
Firefighters had to truck in water because there are no fire hydrants in the rural area. Schaefer said temperatures at the time were zero to 3 degrees, causing the water to freeze.
