Fire Destroys Georgia Church
MORROW, Ga. --
It was a wake-up call Virginia Boschert never expected to get.
“We got a call a little before 4 a.m. and they said the church was on fire,” said Boschert.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they said Calvary Baptist Church on Mt. Zion Circle in Morrow was fully engulfed in flames.
Clayton County Battalion Fire Chief Landry Merkison told Channel 2 Action News that the flames got so intense that the blaze was upgraded to a second alarm.
“Heavy flames were coming from the roof. We had 40-50 personnel at the scene to get the blaze under control,” said Merkison.
The church sustained heavy damage to its main building.
Pastor Mike Mullins told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young that he planned to hold Sunday service despite the fire.
“We will have service. We’ll have it out here under the trees … under the oak trees,” said Mullins.
