KANSAS CITY, Mo. --

A mother was burned saving her two children when an early-morning fire erupted inside their Kansas City apartment.

The fire apparently started in a second-floor unit at the East Hills apartments at 76th Street and Monroe Avenue just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

"I screamed for my husband to get out -- knocked on doors and got neighbors out," neighbor Anitra told KMBC.

Firefighters had the fire under control at 8:20 a.m.

One mother ran through the fire carrying her 1-month-old baby and a toddler. Neighbors said her clothes caught on fire during the rescue.

"We got fire off of her," Anitra said.

Fire department spokesman Joe Vitale said that the mother suffered minor burns and children suffered minor smoke inhalation. All were taken to hospitals to be treated.

The Red Cross said it is helping six families displaced by the fire.

The apparent cause of the fire was an oil candle in the apartment where the mother and her two children lived. Damage is estimated at $140,000.
