BALTIMORE --

Police are investigating the death of a wheelchair bound man after he died due to fire at his home.

Firefighters were called to the man's home at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of Eutaw Place in West Baltimore.

Officers said they found the man unresponsive in his wheelchair. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire officials said it appears the victim was using a stove to warm his home and had all the burners turned on.

The intense heat triggered the automatic fire sprinkler, firefighters said.

Investigators said the heat created steam that burned the man. Fire crews said he suffered severe facial burns.

The state medical examiner responded to the scene to remove the body.

An autopsy is planned to conclusively determine the exact cause of death.
