Dec. 05--A two-alarm blaze tore through a two-family house on Sydney Street in the Savin Hill neighborhood of Dorchester yesterday morning, displacing nine tenants and causing an estimated $500,000 in damage, fire officials said.

The blaze began at 10:54 a.m. in the rear first-floor level of the house at 161 Sydney St., said Boston Fire spokesman Steve MacDonald.

It took 60 Boston firefighters about 30 minutes to combat the brunt of the fire, MacDonald said. All tenants were safely evacuated and not injured. The Red Cross was brought in to assist the displaced residents.

One firefighter was treated at Carney Hospital for a non-life-threatening shoulder injury, MacDonald said.

The intense heat of the blaze caused heavy damage to a car behind the house and melted vinyl siding on a nearby home, MacDonald said. The fire also caused thick smoke to blow across Interstate 93 southbound. The cause for the fire remains under -investigation.
