Dec. 07--SCHENECTADY -- Sixteen tenants of a building were displaced but escaped injury and two city firefighters suffered minor injuries after a blaze erupted Tuesday in the kitchen of a downstairs apartment, Deputy Chief Michael Gillespie said.
Gillespie said the three or four tenants inside the North Fuller Street building were fleeing the structure when fire crews arrived after receiving the emergency call around 12:30 p.m.
They arrived to find the tenants being assisted by cadets from the nearby Zone 5 training academy, said Gillespie. He said the blaze was ignited when a tenant in a downstairs apartment left an unattended pot on the stove in the kitchen.
The displaced tenants are expected to be housed at another complex owned by the same management company of their residence, said Gillespie.
The deputy chief said firefighters were able to rescue a full grown male pit bull from the 3-story wood-frame structure and later discovered a 40-pound pit bull puppy.
The apartment where the fire started sustained heavy fire damage as well as smoke and water damage while an flat above it sustained some fire damage. The structure sustained smoke damage, said Gillespie.
