There apparently are no safeguards in place for attempting to weed out potential arsonists from the ranks of volunteer or paid career firefighters in Gloucester County.

Two of three men arrested Monday in connection with a string of arson fires in Washington Township were volunteer firefighters.

"There is no psych evaluation that I'm aware of," said Gloucester County Fire Marshal William Rieger. He said fire companies routinely do a physical examination on applicants, process the application and, if accepted, the candidate is made a fire company member and sent to training.
