Arson Bust at Queens High School

A 16-year-old high school student is facing arson and drug charges for setting a trash can ablaze inside his Queens school, police said yesterday.

January 16, 2004 -- A 16-year-old high school student is facing arson and drug charges for setting a trash can ablaze inside his Queens school, police said yesterday.

Tyrone McCalla was caught lighting a wastepaper basket on fire at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday morning inside an unoccupied room within Springfield Gardens High School at 143-10 Springfield Blvd., cops said.

Fire officials said they received a 911 call complaining of smoke inside the high school at 9:34 a.m. and left the scene at 9:52 a.m., after extinguishing the small blaze.

No one was injured and no property was damaged in the incident, authorities said.

McCalla was also slapped with a drug charge for having a small amount of marijuana with him.
