Dec. 22--A Orange County sheriff's deputy suffered smoke inhalation rescuing an elderly man from a fire at an Orange County home on Thursday, the Sheriff's Office said.
A resident of the home on Micco Drive, near the Mall at Millennia, called 911 just before 6 a.m. to report that his house was on fire, Orange County Fire Rescue said.
Deputy Miguel Rosario was first to arrive, and was told by the resident that his father was still inside. The deputy took action, officials said, entering the burning house.
Rosario found the caller's father in the living room, and was able to get him outside. Firefighters arrived soon after and quickly extinguished the blaze, officials said.
The residents were hospitalized in serious condition, the Sheriff's Office said. They deputy was also taken to area hospital and was being held for observation.
Firefighters said that they had to cut through "burglary bars" on the home's windows in order to get inside. The fire was believed to have started in the living room.
The State Fire Marshal's Office will investigate the cause of the blaze.
