Jan. 03--SACRAMENTO COUNTY -- A string of suspicious fires kept firefighters busy early Tuesday morning in Sacramento, who believe they were set by more than one arsonist.
A total of seven fires sparked within three hours. Six are suspicious. One is listed as accidental.
The first began in a car on Marconi Avenue in Carmichael around 11:45 p.m. Monday. The fire then spread from the car to a nearby garbage can, then a home. Neighbors woke up the home's residents who all escaped safely. The damage to the home is not extension.
Shortly after midnight, Sacramento Metro firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire on Elkhorn Boulevard and Andrea Boulevard in North Highlands. Fire had started outside of a strip mall, and burned a storage container that was next to the building.
Also just after midnight, firefighters responded to El Camino Avenue, near Walnut Avenue, in Carmichael to put out a fire there.
Around 2:30 a.m., another fire began in North Highlands. This was on Roseville Road and Madison Avenue. A dumpster filled with carpet remnants and carpet padding was burning, sending up thick black smoke.
The fires are listed as suspicious. The Assistant Chief for the Sacramento Metro Fire District, Scott Cockrum, says he believes the fires were set by more than one person.
