Candle Caused Fire That Destroyed Calif. Apartments

Jan. 05--RANCHO CORDOVA -- A candle burning unattended is the cause of a fire that destroyed a Rancho Cordova apartment complex.

Five people had to be rescued from the Wednesday night fire at the Fountain Crest apartment complex.

One upstairs unit was completely destroyed and two others were damaged by the fire, which started around 7 p.m.

Three children from the upstairs apartment were thrown from the balcony to safety as people on the ground caught them.

Another two adults had to be rescued by firefighters who extended a ladder to reach them.

One person was taken to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. Eleven people from four apartments cannot return to their homes.

The Red Cross is giving shelter, food and clothes to those affected by the fire.
