Jan. 11--The cause of a fire that destroyed the clubhouse at a Clay County country club cannot be determined because of the extensive damage, according to federal and state investigators.

The Friday night blaze at the Liberty Hills Country Club caused an estimated $3.5 million in damage and originated in the basement, according to a joint statement from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Missouri State Fire Marshal.

Investigators spent three days examining the fire scene and conducting interviews before finding the cause to be "undetermined."

That finding can be changed if new information comes to light in the future, investigators said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the building at 19808 County Road H about 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Their efforts were hampered by a non-functioning fire hydrant near the building as well as high winds. No one was injured in the incident.

The Country Club's website says it is working to find alternate sites for people who had booked weddings in the building.
