Two Ill. University Students Hurt in Off-Campus Fire Die

Two young women pulled from a burning apartment early Sunday have died.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Two young women pulled from a burning apartment early Sunday have died, the fire chief said today.

The victims were identified as Lacy V. Siddall, 21, and Lauren D. Petersen, 19, both of Bethalto.

Siddall died early today, at an unspecified time. Peterson died at 8:30 a.m., said Fire Chief Rick Welle.

Both women, students at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, initially were taken to Anderson Hospital emergency department in Maryville. ARCH Air Medical Services helicopters then flew the victims to St. Luke's.

Welle said the fire started in the bedroom of the apartment on the second floor of an older residence at 648 Hillsboro Ave.

Welle said a next-door neighbor called 911 at 3:42 a.m. to report seeing the flames, with Edwardsville firefighters getting mutual aid from Wood River, Glen Carbon, Holiday Shores and Collinsville fire departments.
