LUMBERTON, N.C. -- A Robeson County volunteer firefighter is accused of setting multiple fires in woods in the East Howellsville community this morning, authorities said.

John Bradley Fogleman, 19, of the 23rd Street in Lumberton, is charged with six counts of setting woodlands on fire, said Lt. Brian Duckworth, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office arson investigator.

Fogleman was still in his probationary period as a member of the Northwoods Fire Department, Duckworth said.

Fogleman is no longer with the department, Duckworth said.

The fires were set along Lee Britt Road in an area that is popular for camping, Duckworth said.

A school bus driver saw smoke from one of the fires this morning , Duckworth said, and notified authorities.

A firefighter living nearby was responding to the call when he saw a pickup truck with a Northwoods Fire Department license plate on the front of it, Duckworth said.

However, he was unable to get the license plate number, Duckworth said.

The fires ranged in size from a scorched spot to about an acre, Duckworth said.

Fogleman was found at his campsite across the road from some of the fires, Duckworth said.

Fogleman's bail was set at $3,000.
