A Memorial Day fire that destroyed a warehouse owned by the North Carolina Railroad has been labeled suspicious, city officials said Wednesday.

The rented warehouse at 901 North Craven St. housed building and personal items belonging to New Bern company Precision Molding. No one was injured.

The cause is under investigation, New Bern City spokeswoman Colleen M. Roberts said.

New Bern firefighters, who battled the blaze for hours using aerial equipment, were hampered by boarded-up windows with bars on them. At one point, the roof collapsed. A firefighter was treated for overheating, and was later treated and released.

City officials on Wednesday also said a May 25 fire at the Catered Affair, also called Le Bistro Cafe and Art Gallery, on Trent Road was ruled accidental and unintentional.

The cause was discarded smoking material in the back northeast corner of the building. No one was hurt.
