Jan. 03--A Triangle woman has been charged with attempting to kill herself and her 3-year-old daughter in a house fire.
Julia Franzke Vazquez, 26, of 19050 Fuller Heights Rd #322 in Triangle, was arrested in Fairfax County on Wednesday after slamming her car into a tree, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.
That's when the story began to unfold.
Vazquez is accused of giving her 3-year-old daughter cough syrup to make her go to sleep about 2 p.m. Wednesday at their apartment in Triangle. Perok said Vazquez then lit a fire in the bathroom "with the intent to kill them both."
But when the flames became too intense, Vazquez then put the fire out and took her 3-year-old to Fairfax County, where she dropped her off with a relative, according to Perok. The family member took the girl to the hospital to be treated for minor burns.
A short time later, Vazquez drove into a tree in Fairfax. She was hospitalized for her injuries.
After a joint investigation by Prince William and Fairfax police and the Prince William fire marshal's office, Vazquez was charged with attempted first-degree murder and arson to an occupied dwelling, Perok said.
She remained hospitalized Thursday. Her daughter was treated for minor burns and released to family members.
