Jan. 07--Four people, including a baby and a teenager, were killed when a fire broke out in a home in RockfordFour People, Including Baby, Teen, Die in Ill. Fire early this morning.
Firefighters were called to the two-story home on the south side of the city around 12:30 a.m. Relatives told the Rockford Register Star that they tried to rescue the victims from the second floor but were forced back by thick black smoke.
"I tried to get some water, but by the time I got to the kitchen to get water, the fire was already spreading," Diontae Cashatt, 26, told the newspaper. "I tried to go upstairs and I couldn't."
She said the victims were a 10-month-old girl, a 13-year-old, a 61-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man. The names of the victims have not been released.
Officials said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical, but an investigation was continuing.
