Jan. 27--A 10 year-old-girl died in a southeast Baltimore fire, in one of three blazes firefighters battled Saturday night.
The fatal fire occurred about 11 p.m. in the 6600 block of Hartwait Ave., near the city line and Dundalk. Seven people made it out of the fire safely, believed to include a family with a grandfather, mother and five children, fire Chief Kevin Cartwright said.
Firefighters searched the house on a report of a missing child upon arriving to the scene, but because of unsafe conditions were ordered to fight the blaze from outside the home. The fire was brought under control by about 11:45 p.m., after which firefighters found the girl on the first floor of the two-story home.
Three of the children were taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Cartwright said.
Firefighters, fire investigators and police arson detectives were on the scene early Sunday to perform assessments into the cause of this fire. It was undetermined whether or not the home had smoke alarms. The investigation continued during the day Sunday.
City firefighters were meanwhile responding to two other fires late Saturday into early Sunday, one in the 1100 block of West Franklin St. in Harlem Park and another in the 3600 block of Windsor Mill Road in Mount Holly.
