April 04--MONROE Police and firefighters rescued an unconscious man and a dog from a burning house early Thursday.
A woman and four children were able to escape the flames at 24 Squire Road on their own, a fire department spokesman said.
The fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom of the house in the Barn Hill section of town about 2:30 a.m., said Kevin Catalano, spokesman for the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.
Three police officers and a firefighter pulled the unconscious man downstairs and out to the front lawn, where he was treated by medics. A second firefighter carried the family dog to safety.
The man regained consciousness before being transported to the hospital, but the extent of his injuries are unknown. A firefighter also had to be treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, but did not require hospitalization.
The fire was contained to the master bedroom and quickly extinguished, but smoke filled the second floor of the roughly 3,500-square-foot home, Catalano said.
The house's main living area was not affected by the fire, and fire officials expect that the family can return soon.
Four fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue truck from the Monroe, Stepney, and Stevenson volunteer fire departments, plus three ambulances, responded to the fire. All emergency vehicles left the scene by 4:15 a.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
