Fire Causes $1M in Damages to Ohio Ford Dealership

April 5, 2013
A construction worker may have accidentally sparked a fire that caused more than $1 million in damages to a Columbus, Ohio dealership.

April 05--A fire at Germain Ford on the Northwest Side yesterday was unintentionally started by a worker on the roof and caused more than $1 million damage, a Columbus Division of Fire spokesman said.

The business expects to reopen today.

No one was injured in the fire, which was called in at 11:09 a.m., Firefighter Bill Ehrgood said. The fire was contained shortly before noon, but firefighters stayed around to check for hot spots.

Workers were clearing out a vacant area as part of construction on the building at 7250 Sawmill Rd., according to a statement from Germain. A worker on the roof was using a saw whose sparks might have ignited gasoline, Ehrgood said.

Those who were inside the building were able to get out safely, he said. Most of the fire damage was in the parts department, with smoke and water damage elsewhere.
