As firefighters were searching for an alternative water source at a house fire in Hyannis, they discovered a second fire.

April 20--HYANNIS -- Four separate homes were damaged by fires early this morning in what fire officials are calling arson.

The fires occurred on Pilgrim Lane and Baxter and none was occupied.

At 4:22 a.m., Hyannis Fire received a call from people heading toward Cape Cod Mall for an early morning sale and reported heavy smoke, Hyannis Fire Deputy Chief Dean Melanson said. Firefighters located a fire underway at 45 Pilgrim Lane.

Hydrants in the area were not working and when firefighters were searching for an alternative water source, they discovered a second fire at 33 Pilgrim Lane, Melanson said.

Subsequently, fires were also discovered at 27 Pilgrim Lane and 135 Baxter Road, he said.

The lone injury was to a firefighter who was struck by falling debris which broke his nose, Melanson said. The firefighter was treated at Cape Cod Hospital and released.

Barnstable Police, Hyannis Fire and investigators from state Fire Marshal Stephen Coan's office were on the scene this morning. An accelerant-sniffing dog was also part of the investigation.

One of the houses is heavily damaged, two are moderately damaged and one suffered only minor kitchen damage.
