April 22--A man and woman were found dead in a Tulsa condominium following a fire on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
Firefighters about 3 p.m. were called to the fire at Brandy Chase Condominiums at 6737 S. Peoria Ave., Tulsa Fire Department Capt. Stan May said.
After extinguishing the fire, the firefighters found the bodies of George Edward Midcalf, 55, and Jocqueline Easley, 57, in a bedroom, May said.
The fire apparently started after someone was cooking in the residence, May said.
May said the fire was contained to the kitchen area with only smoke affecting the remainder of the residence and another unit.
Neighbors tried to alert those inside when they saw smoke coming from the apartment by knocking on the door, but no one answered.
"I beat on the door," said Susie Poston, who noticed smoke coming from the unit moments after she arrived home from the store. "I screamed their names, and banged on the windows."
Poston said the couple had lived in the unit for about six months.
No one else was believed to be inside the apartment at the time of the fire, officials said.
A final decision on the cause of death has not been made.
"It's just very sad," Poston said. "They were really nice. It's just tragic."
