April 28--WATERBURY -- One person is dead as a result of a fire that heavily damaged two three-story homes at Tremont and Sudbury streets on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The victim lived on the third floor, and firefighters were able to get him out of the house as it was burning, Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Ayotte said. The man was taken to Waterbury Hospital, where he died, he said.
Mayor Neil M. O'Leary said Saturday night on his Twitter account that the victim's name is Victor Rivera.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Victor Rivera who fell victim to the tragic fire on Sudbury St. earlier today," O'Leary's message said.
Fire officials said the blaze started on the third floor of the house on Tremont Street, then quickly spread to the adjacent house on Sudbury Street.
Ayotte said three firefighters were injured, and were treated at Watebury Hospital.
"There is a lot of damage to both buildings. They're pretty well gutted," Ayotte said. "The fire had a head start. Both houses were pretty well involved by the time we got there."
Several residents will be displaced because of the damage to the houses, officials said.
