May 01--A medical building near Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center caught fire this morning, sending smoke and flames shooting from the roof as employees scrambled for safety, officials said.
Nobody was injured in the blaze, officials said. Damage was estimated at $1 million.
The fire broke out about 8:50 a.m. in a building at 3025 S. Maryland Parkway that houses Southern Nevada Medical Group, Sunrise Pediatrics, Quest Diagnostics and West Coast Imaging, a Clark County Fire Department spokeswoman said.
The building was open at the time, but employees smelled smoke as they arrived for work and evacuated before firefighters arrived, officials said.
Firefighters had to pull down the ceiling and drywall to get at the fire, Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Erik Newman said. The cause has not been determined, he said.
It took about 40 minutes to put out the fire, Newman said. No other buildings were threatened, and the wind was not an issue fighting the blaze, he said.
Shortly after 4 p.m., a hot spot at the building reignited and firefighters had to return to the building, Newman said. The afternoon fire was extinguished 11 minutes after firefighters returned, Newman said.
The building will be closed for an undetermined period of time because of the fire, smoke and water damage, officials said.
About 50 firefighters from Clark County and Las Vegas responded to the morning fire. Thirty firefighters returned for the afternoon fire.
