Home Explosion Injures Nine in Northern Mexico

A house in San Luis Rio Colorado, near the U.S. exploded Monday destroying the home, injuring nine people and extensively damaging businesses.

July 16--At least nine people were reported injured Monday night as a result of an explosion at a home in San Luis Rio Colorado, Son.

The explosion, the cause of which had not been immediately determined, destroyed the home in a residential area at Constitution Avenue and Los Pinos Boulevard, and caused extensive damage to a neighboring Circle K convenience store and gasoline station, the news website SanluisRC.com reported on its Facebook page.

Many of those hurt were injured when the explosion shattered windows and scattered broken glass, SanluisRC.com reported.

The website reported that an elderly woman and a youth were pulled out of the rubble of the explosion by San Luis Rio Colorado firefighters and were rushed to a hospital in the Mexican border city.

An updated condition report for the two were not immediately available.

Firefighter Luis Cebreros, spokesman for the fire department in San Luis, Ariz., said he heard the explosion from the fire station in the Arizona border city at about 9 p.m. The Arizona fire department was not asked to lend assistance at the scene of the explosion.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.
