Explosion Occurs in Large Minn. Office Building

A transformer exploded in the basement of a large office building in Minneapolis forcing the evacuation of the 20-story structure.

July 18--Emergency personnel are on the scene this afternoon of an explosion in the basement of a large office building in St. Louis Park.

The Metropoint 600 building at the northwest corner of Interstate 394 and Hwy. 169 is being evacuated and several fire trucks are in front of the building.

A fire official said a transformer exploded in the basement of the 20-story building, but there is no indication that it caused a fire.

Gordie Hampson, whose company Cushman and Wakefield oversees the building's leasing and management, said early Thursday afternoon that he thinks the situation is not serious but he offered no further information.

Police said they were first called at 10:30 a.m.

No other information was immediately available.
