Aug. 09--BEVERLY -- Police say an Odell Avenue man assaulted an officer during an altercation that began when the Fire Department found him burning brush at 5:30 yesterday morning.

Paul Joseph Doupe, 25, of 14 Odell Ave., Beverly, was arrested on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

A 5:29 a.m. report of a fire at a playground brought police and the Fire Department to Doupe's address, according to the incident log.

Doupe had been burning brush and "was not happy when the Fire Department came to put it out," Officer Mike Boccuzzi said in an email.

A shouting match ensued, and then Doupe "struggled with officers when they attempted to place him into custody on the disorderly charge, resulting in the other two charges," Boccuzzi said.

No injuries were reported.
