Aug. 30--GARDEN CITY -- A mobile home fire in Garden City took out power lines and blocked traffic as crews worked to extinguish it.

The burning home, at 39th Street and Adams Street, was mostly extinguished minutes after 3 p.m., but firefighters still had to extinguish flames burning beneath the floor.

Firefighters and residents rescued three Chihuahuas and 10 puppies from inside the home. No one was injured in the blaze, dispatchers said.

Flames burned 20 percent of the structure before crews were able to extinguish it.

One of the dogs woke up a housemate of renter Carly Benson. The housemate saw smoke, Benson said.

"We were all asleep," said Benson, 26.

The two adults and Benson's 5-month-old son were able to leave safely. They had lived in the home since November and had no renter's insurance.

"We have nothing," sobbed Benson, whose husband is in jail.

The blaze also took out power lines in the area. Ada County Sheriff's Office deputies blocked 39th Street and Adams Street to traffic.
