As many as 30 cats were removed from a home in Troy after an electric family drove them from the house along with their owner.

March 18--TROY -- Between 25 and 30 cats are being removed from a city home that caught fire Monday night.

Neither the homeowner nor the cats were hurt in the blaze around 7 p.m. at 48 Maple Ave., Troy Fire Chief Tom Garrett said.

The blaze was accidental, sparked by snow melt dripping through holes in the ceiling and onto wires, Garrett said. Crews had the fire out in about two hours.

No one was injured during the blaze.

The house will likely be condemned, Garrett said.

Even before the fire, the house was in poor condition from lack of upkeep and the homeowner was hoarding the cats, Garrett said.

Where the cats will be cared for and whether they will be able to be adopted was not immediately clear.

The woman is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
