April 05--ANYONE WITH information on these incidents is asked to contact WVU Police, at 304-293-2677, and ask for investigating officers Lt. Laurie Burks and Capt. Phil Scott.
WVU Police is attempting to identify suspects behind an arson and an assault Thursday night and Friday morning.
According to a police press release, university police responded to a fire alarm with the Morgantown Fire Department on the seventh floor of WVU's Arnold Hall Annex.
WVU Police Chief Bob Roberts said paper attached to the wall outside an elevator was set on fire at about 11:50 p.m. Thursday.
"The only damage was minor, but the risk it posed is what we're concerned about," he said. No injuries were reported.
Roberts said officers are also looking for witnesses to an aggravated assault.
The male victim was assaulted by two other men at about 4:15 a.m. Friday, near Prospect Street, on University Avenue. The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital. According to another press release, the suspects were last seen on University Avenue, having left the scene after a witness called 911.
Roberts did not know the extent of the victim's injuries as of Friday afternoon.
Roberts said a witness described both suspects as white men. One was 5 feet 9 inches tall, with sandy colored hair. Another was 6 feet 2 inches tall and wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt and hat, Roberts said.
The penalty for arson is two to 20 years in prison. Assault carries a six-month prison sentence.
