June 25--A Harrodsburg man died while trying to escape a fire in his second-story bedroom early Tuesday.
Anthony Smith, 57, had tried to get out through a small window on the second floor of his apartment building, said Mercer County Coroner C. David Ransdell.
"It looks like in a struggle to get out, he ended up going down head first," Ransdell said.
The incident was reported just after 5 a.m., and Smith was the only person in the apartment at the time, Ransdell said.
The fire started in the bedroom, but information about its cause was not available, officials said.
Ransdell said Smith, who fell 14 to 16 feet, was taken to James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of injuries sustained in the fall.
No other apartments in the fourplex at 303 Carson Court were damaged, said Chris Smith, senior firefighter at the Harrodsburg Fire Department.
Funeral arrangements for Smith are being handled by Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.
