A five-year-old Iowa boy perished Sunday afternoon after running back into a burning house in an attempt to save an infant and an adult, who also died.
Three others suffered serious burns in the fire, Fort Dodge Fire Chief Kent Hulett told reporters.
"When I pulled up, it was a ball of fire. We knew there were victims in the house, but the fire was so intense we couldn't get in to do search and rescue," Hulett told The Des Moines Register
Two of the injured victims were flown to the burn unit at University of Iowa Hospital.
Hulett said the cause remains under investigation. Officials don't know if there were smoke detectors in the two-story house.
