Four children have died in a Trenton, Missouri, house early Saturday morning. The children, ages 3 to 7, were asleep when the blaze started.
According to Fox4KC, FOX 4, firefighters and responders were alerted to the blaze at about 1 a.m. They discovered smoke and flames pouring from the second floor where the children were asleep.
The children’s father attempted to rescue the four kids trapped upstairs using a ladder and knocking out windows, but was overcome by smoke and his attempts were unsuccessful. Three of his five children and his niece died in the blaze, according to the television station.
Four other people in the home, including a 2-year-old girl escape the blaze. One child was not home when the fire broke out.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
