Burn Spreads to House of Maine Deputy Chief

Paris Deputy Fire Chief Willie Buffington lost more than some property when a permitted fire got out of control around noon Monday.
Buffington got a state permit to burn a barn that he had demolished on his land off High Street in Paris, but the fire spread quickly from the rubble to a nearby vacant home he owned. The structure was destroyed.
“It was little embarrassing for him,” Paris Fire Chief Brad Frost said Monday night. “Of all people, he should have known better.”
Frost said the pile of barn rubble was no more than 10 feet from the house, which he described as old and dilapidated. It had been empty for about a year.
Frost said the fire took off and “it was rocking when we got there.” No injuries were reported.
