Sept. 28--Two people were killed in a house fire early Monday morning in Severna Park, a county fire official said.
The fire occurred at 1:45 a.m. in the 100 block of Benfield Road, near Severna Park High School.
When firefighters arrived they discovered heavy flames coming from the back of the single-family, rancher style home, said fire department Capt. Russ Davies.
Firefighters made their way inside and found the two victims unconscious in a front bedroom, Davies said. They were brought outside and declared deceased. Nobody else was in the home at the time of the fire, Davies said.
It took 40 firefighters about 30 minutes to place the fire under control.
Fire officials are not yet releasing the victims' ages or genders. Their remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.
Two dogs also were killed, Davies said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Fire investigators and police remained on the scene throughout the morning. The house and a portion of the street were blocked off by fire tape.
A neighbor who wished not to be identified said he noticed a red glow shining through his windows early Monday morning.
"I opened my blinds and the whole house was on fire," he said.
The neighbor called 911 and moved his vehicles from his driveway. Firefighters arrived moments later and began battling the blaze.
"It's horrible," the man said.
Like others in the neighborhood, the man said he didn't know the residents of the house well. But they would greet each other, he said.
"It's an awful sad thing," said another neighbor, who also asked not to be identified.
The incident marks the 11th and 12th fire deaths this year in Anne Arundel County.
In January, six people were killed in a house fire on Childs Point Road outside of Annapolis. Weeks later, three people were killed in a house fire in Brooklyn Park.
In May, a woman was killed in another house fire in Brooklyn Park.
