WAPATO, Wash. – Three people are dead after a house fire about two miles west of Wapato early this morning, according to Yakima County Fire District No. 5.

A man and woman in their mid-20s died at the scene, while a two-year-old child was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a local hospital, according to a news release issue by the fire district.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The fire was reported at about 1:40 a.m. at a double wide manufactured home at 2251 W. Wapato Road. When the first of about 20 firefighters arrived, they discovered smoke coming from the home. Yakima County sheriff’s deputies already on the scene told firefighters that they had opened the front door and could see a person, but were unable to reach them, the release said.

Firefighters then entered the home, removed the first person and after a search found the two others, the release said.

CPR was begun on all three, firefighters said. A second search of the home found no other occupants.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been turned over to the Yakama Nation tribal police, the release said.

Names of the three are being withheld until families can be notified.
