CHILLUM, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two twin toddlers and their grandparents are dead after an overnight house fire in Chillum Tuesday morning, officials said.
The first report of a fire in the 6700 block of Knollbrook Drive came in just after 2:00 a.m., according to Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire Department. Once on scene fire crews encountered heavy fire, but were able to quickly rescue four people who were trapped inside the home. Brady says two-year-old twins, a boy and girl, and their grandparents were transported to local hospitals and later died from their injuries.
Officials identified the two-year-old twins as Anna and Israel Omijie. The grandparents have been identified as 55-year-old Caroline and 63-year-old Samson Omogbo.
Three more occupants escaped the flames on their own, including the children's mother person who made a desperate jump from a second-story window, suffering non-life-threatening injuries in the process. The father made it out of the house safely. Officials said in a press conference that all seven people are related. It is not clear who the other person is.
According to Brady, multiple fire crews, including some firefighters from Montgomery County, responded to the scene with no less than 18 trucks. The fire was brought under control within thirty minutes.
Right now investigators are trying to determine the cause of the tragedy. The loss has been set at $250,000. There was no working fire alarm in the house.
This is the one year anniversary of an Annapolis house fire that left four children and their grandparents dead
