A repair shop in the Englewood neighborhood collapsed to the ground after it caught fire Tuesday morning, according to authorities.
A worker using a torch touched off the fire around 8 a.m. in the 200 block of West 65th Street, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
"The car went up, they tried to put it out themselves," Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. "The first unit got on scene and the whole place was engulfed so they didn't do a good job of trying to put it out."
Smoke blew away from Saint Bernard Hospital & Healthcare Center, which is about a block away.
Crews had problems with one hydrant, Langford said, but otherwise there were no water problems.
Squad 5, while on the way to the fire, was in a traffic crash at 63rd and Loomis. Squad 1, which is stationed downtown, was called to the scene for the fire instead.
No one was injured in the fire or the crash, Langford said.
A Level 1 hazardous materials alert was called as a precaution, Langford said.
