Vacant N.H. Building Destroyed in Three-Alarmer

It was one of the largest fires in recent history in Goffstown.

Goffstown -- A three-alarm fire gutted a vacant industrial building Sunday, burning for hours and producing a large plume of smoke that was visible for miles.

Fire Chief Richard O’Brien said there were no injuries despite the size of the fire, which broke through the roof just after the first crews arrived at the 711 Mast Road scene.

O’Brien said firefighters heard explosions coming from inside the building, but investigators wouldn’t know what blew up until they had a chance to get inside and look at the remains.

“It’s one of the biggest fires that we’ve had in town for some time,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien spoke as crews continued working to get the fire under control more than two hours after the initial emergency call came in around 1:30 p.m.

Area residents lined the sidewalk across the street and watched as firefighters from Goffstown and departments from neighboring communities continued dousing the smouldering remains of the building with water.

A Chinese restaurant next door sustained some smoke damage and melted siding from the heat. Patrons were evacuated to a safer spot by a waiter who also works for fire department, witnesses said.

O’Brien said the burned building has been vacant for nearly two years.
