The Maryland Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of a two-alarm blaze that destroyed Bob Evans Restaurant in Easton early Saturday.
Upon smelling a strong odor of smoke, workers at nearby Panera called 911 about 1:50 a.m.
Easton firefighters found heavy fire and smoke visible. An engine crew made an attempt at an interior attack, but the incident commander observed HVAC units on the roof sagging, and ordered a defensive operation.
At the height of operations, five elevated master streams and two ground based 2-1/2” Blitz fire lines were used. The blaze was placed under control at 4:05 a.m.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours conducting overhaul and hitting hot spots.
Due to roof collapse, investigators called for heavy equipment operators to remove large items from the debris to allow safe access.
The loss has been estimated at $3.5M.
