Coals from a grill had been dumped on a beach.

HYANNIS — A 2-year-old girl was burned after walking across hot coals at Veterans Park Beach this afternoon, according to Barnstable police Sgt. Mark Butler.

Hyannis firefighters responded at 2:16 p.m. and brought the victim to Barnstable Municipal Airport, where she was picked up by Boston MedFlight and airlifted to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, said Hyannis fire Capt. Mark Storie.

The girl suffered second-degree burns to the bottom of her feet, Storie said.

It appeared someone dumped the hot coals on the beach from the grill area at Veterans Memorial Park, Butler said.
