Trucker Killed in Fiery NJ Crash

July 15, 2016
The rig hit a bridge abutment, and a box truck before bursting into flames.

A trucker was killed Thursday morning when a tractor-trailer crashed and burst into flames on eastbound Interstate 78, about 20 miles east of Easton and Phillipsburg, police said.

The truck appeared to have hit a bridge abutment in Hunterdon County at 7:20 a.m. before it collided with a box truck, caught fire and ran across the highway, crashing into a guardrail.

As flames engulfed the truck cab, the trailer collapsed on its side near the Readington Township-Tewksbury Township border.

New Jersey State Police did not have information on the second driver's condition.

The accident shut down eastbound lanes for six hours. About an hour after the I-78 crash, another crash was reported on Route 22, an alternate route in the area, further complicating morning commutes.

Police are investigating whether a blown tire or mechanical failure touched off the I-78 accident.
