A fourth was too scared, and was rescued by firefighters.

A San Antonio police officer is being hailed as a hero after catching three children who leaped from an apartment building to escape a fire Monday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the complex in the northern part of the city around 8:15 a.m. and found that flames had filled a stairway and were spreading into apartments, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

San Antonio police Officer Tim Bowen was one of the first people on the scene and saw that four children were in one of the second-floor apartments.

He was able to persuade three of the children to jump into his arms to escape the blaze. The fourth child, who was too frightened, was soon rescued by firefighters.

Woody Woodward, a spokesman for the San Antonio Fire Department, said there were no major injuries in the fire but that a dog in one of the apartments died.

Woodward added that the fire was "very suspicious" and said arson investigators would determine its cause.
