July 25--Two children died in a house fire Monday morning in the Marshall-Shadeland section of Pittsburgh, authorities said.
The children, ages 7 and 12, were in the attic of the house when the fire broke out, said Emily Schaffer, a Pittsburgh public safety department spokeswoman.
A 38-year-old woman and a 6-year-old child were rescued from the house and taken to UPMC Mercy in Uptown to be treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries, Schaffer said. A 16-year-old boy was also able to get out of the house and is being treated for smoke inhalation.
Two firefighters suffered heat-related ailments, one of whom was taken to the hospital for treatment, Schaffer said. The temperature was nearly 90 degrees by mid-morning.
The house is near the intersection of Sorrel Street and Marshall Avenue near Route 65 on the city's North Side.
The first call reporting the fire came in at about 10:25 a.m. Firefighters were spotted on the roof of the house shortly after 11 a.m. working to put out hot spots.
