A man who set fire to his parents' Ocean Springs home and assaulted two police officers has been ordered to serve 15 years of a 50-year prison term.
Circuit Judge Robert Krebs on Monday gave Timothy Beaugez a 20-year prison term for first-degree arson. The judge suspended five years, leaving 15 to serve.
Krebs also ordered a 30-year term on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer. Krebs suspended 15 years, leaving 15 to serve.
Krebs ordered the prison terms to run concurrently.
Beaugez, 57, set fire to his parents’ wood-frame house on General Pershing Avenue on Oct. 9, 2013, and used a shotgun to fire at two officers. He pleaded guilty to all the charges in June.
Family members have said he may have been upset because his estranged son and his two granddaughters were living at the home of his parents, Raymond and Donna Beaugez. His father is a retired Jackson County judge and a retired Ocean Springs police officer.
Timothy Beaugez came to the house, where his father was sitting on the porch with a friend. His sister and his mother were visiting but left when Timothy Beaugez became irate, a relative told the Sun Herald.
He found his father’s shotgun in a bedroom and stood inside the house while firing outside through a door.
One of two police officers who had responded to the home was hit in the face with shotgun pellets. The officer was treated at a hospital.
Beaugez used a 2-liter soda bottle and gasoline to set the house on fire. The blaze gutted part of the home.
Beaugez was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation before he was arrested.
