The Jerome family of five heard the detectors and left the house.

JEROME — A smoke alarm that Jerome firefighters helped to install a few months ago saved a family Saturday.

Jerome city firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a home on North Buchanan Street and found when they arrived the family had successfully escaped the quickly growing fire, the department said in a statement. The tenant told firefighters that the smoke alarms are what alerted her to get her family out.

On May 14, the Jerome city and rural fire departments, American Red Cross and local community groups and volunteers installed 392 smoke alarms donated by the Red Cross in 109 houses in Jerome.

The fire was put out in about 15 minutes, but the home was a total loss. Five people lived there who have been displaced, and one adult and three children were home at the time.

"At the end of the day, this is a success, everyone got out safe, the smoke alarms provided just enough warning for that to happen, Jerome city Fire Chief Tom Hughes said in a statement.

City police, Magic Valley Paramedics and the Red Cross all assisted at the fire scene.

Smoke alarms should be tested every month, the fire department said. If you need new ones, visit getasmokealarm.org.
