BRATTLEBORO — Two people were killed in a mobile home fire in West Brattleboro late Tuesday night that left a third person injured.
The Brattleboro Fire Department responded to 3 Record Drive after dispatchers received a call at about 11:45 p.m. reporting that fire was visible from the home and people were still inside, according to a news release from Brattleboro Fire Chief Michael Bucossi.
When firefighters arrived, they were met by two adults who had escaped the fire, who said two more people were inside and had last been seen on the main floor.
The crews used hand lines in their efforts to fight the blaze, but because of the heat and fire conditions, they couldn't enter the home, according to Bucossi.
The fire was upgraded to a second-alarm shortly before midnight and was brought under control at approximately 1:15 a.m. Fire crews were on the scene until about 4 a.m.
Bucossi said the fire is not considered suspicious.
After the heat and flames were reduced, the two victims — both adults — were found inside, Bucossi reported. One of the two adults who escaped the fire suffered second-degree burns to the back of his neck, the chief said in the news release.
The home was about a half mile off Route 9 in Mountain Home Park in West Brattleboro.
The damage to the home was extensive, according to the Brattleboro Fire Department.
The department was assisted at the scene by the Keene Fire Department's rapid intervention team; Rescue Inc.; Brattleboro police; Brattleboro Utilities Division; and the Red Cross.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Brattleboro Fire Department, Brattleboro Police Department, Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit and Vermont Division of Fire Safety.
Additional information was not available this morning from the Brattleboro Fire Department.
